Characterization of high-temperature nuclear fuel-coolant interactions through X-ray visualization and image processing

High-resolution X-ray imaging was employed at the JAEA MELT facility to visualize a kilogram-scale interaction between jet of high temperature molten stainless steel and sodium, mimicking sodium-cooled fast-neutron reactor in aftermath core-disruptive accident. A novel software, SPECTRA, has been developed for quantitative characterization quenching fragmentation. Tracking 3D reconstruction melt phase traversing window enabled detection 72% debris mass recovered post-experiment. The rebounding fragments confirmed solid outer crust melt-coolant interface, while thermal fragmentation event induced rapid vapor expansion. Jet is best explained by vaporization coolant entrained within generating an internal over-pressure sufficient crust. Thermal produced missiles with velocities exceeding that jet, bimodal size distribution coarse shells finer fragments.
